Titanic Tussle for Handball Supremacy: Can MT Melsungen Snatch the Bundesliga Crown?

Competitive club aims for championship victory

Jump on the Twitter bandwagon or chat it up on Facebook, Whatsapp, or email – the Bundesliga handball race is heating up! MT Melsungen pulls off a gutsy performance, punching a hole through TSV Hannover-Burgdorf's title hopes, winning 29:23 (14:15).

With the victory, MT Melsungen kept its clutch on the second spot, sharing the limelight with league leader Füchse Berlin (both 48:10) after 29 grueling games.

Sports Director Michael Allendorf, after the match, wasn't shy about stating MT Melsungen's lofty ambitions: "Now we want to become champions too!" The North Hessians, yet to taste league glory, will go head-to-head with Berlin on May 29.

MT Melsungen showed grit right from the start, both at the beginning and post-intermission. Hannover put up a fight initially and managed to reverse a four-goal deficit, only to briefly lead at halftime. However, Melsungen responded powerfully after the break, with Timo Kastening's 26:23 (58.) goal marking the turning point. Kastening was Melsungen's top scorer with a towering seven goals.

Hannover's squad, under the guidance of former national coach Christian Prokop, missed out on a shot at the top group with their sixth loss of the season. It's unlikely they'll factor into the title race with their current tally of 43:15 points, leaving five games left on the schedule.

F worrying about the Champions, fans should be just as wrapped up in SC Magdeburg's campaign. Coached by Bennet Wiegert, Magdeburg is in third place with 43:11 points, but they have two games in hand. If they win those, Magdeburg would be one step closer to mounting a successful title defense.

Meanwhile, in the nail-biting relegation battle, SG BBM Bietigheim nabbed a vital 31:30 (18:14) victory against Frisch Auf Göppingen. With their current 14:44 points, the newly-promoted team has moved ahead of HC Erlangen to 16th place for the time being.
