British Coastal Championships 2023: Jersey Rowers Shine as England, Wales, and Other Teams Impress
The coastal town of Tynemouth played host to the British Coastal Championships last weekend, with the event organised by Tynemouth Rowing Club and Swift Racing UK. The three-day competition saw impressive performances from various UK teams, but it was Jersey rowers who truly stole the show.
Jersey athletes, under the guidance of coach Rick Rouille, dominated the championships, securing an impressive total of 15 medals, including key golds in senior categories. Notably, Jersey won the Senior Women’s Double Sculls (2x) gold through Ryanna Clifford (19) and Tilly Woodhall (20), finishing in 14 minutes 41 seconds. Clifford and Woodhall also earned gold in the Senior Mixed Quadruple Sculls (4x) alongside ex-Olympian Charles Cousins.
England claimed the most wins overall—25 victories out of 46 races—and secured six of twelve possible wins in the Senior Women’s events, including the Women's Eight 500m sweep. The Junior Women’s Eight, captained by Georgina Joy (Newark RC), won both 2km and 500m races, securing the Irish Travel Agency Cup for the 12th consecutive time.
Wales accumulated eight wins, with highlights including the Women’s Eight (2km) composed of notable rowers like Héloïse Wormleighton, and strong performances in the Women’s Single and Men’s Coxless Four events. Tees Rowing Club also made a splash, winning gold in the J18 Mixed Coxed Quad.
Other notable individual performances included Zack Hills (Tynemouth RC) winning the Open Solos in his age category, James Cox (Agecroft RC) taking the Open Solos senior category, and Elyssa Stoker of City of Sunderland RC winning the Junior Women’s Solo category.
Great Britain won the Men’s, Women’s, and Overall Coupe de la Jeunesse trophies, with Bass Andre (Shanklin Sandown EC) winning the Senior Women’s Solo and Bryony Jones of Llanion Warriors RC taking the Masters Women’s Solo title.
The British Coastal Championships provided a platform for rising talent and showcased the strength of coastal rowing in the UK. With a national development camp taking place in Nottingham, the future of coastal rowing looks bright.
