Competition in Karate, sponsored by Russia, to take place in the Sverdlovsk Region
Yekaterinburg is once again set to host the Russian Karate Championship, marking the third time the city has played host to the prestigious event. Previously, the championship was held in 2010 and 2020.
Karate has established itself as a fundamental sport in the Sverdlovsk region, with approximately 7,500 people regularly participating in the martial art. The upcoming tournament will be held at the Palace of Judo, a venue well-equipped to accommodate the sport's demands.
Leonid Rapoport, the Minister of Physical Culture and Sport of the Sverdlovsk region, has expressed his confidence that the Russian karatekas will deliver a commendable performance. The event promises to be a significant showcase of the nation's talent, with medals being awarded in five weight categories for both men and women in the disciplines of "kumite" and "kata".
The results of the performances at the Russian Karate Championship will play a crucial role in determining the composition of the national team that will represent Russia at the 2026 European Championship in Germany. The tournament is expected to host the best 500 karatekas from 80 regions of Russia.
The competition will feature renowned athletes from the Russian National Team, including the winners of the May European Championship - Ernest Sharafigdinov and Ahmed Akhmedov. Additionally, competitions in kata will be held for individuals with disabilities, intellectual impairments, and wheelchair athletes, further emphasising the sport's inclusivity.
The Russian Karate Championship is part of the state program "Sport of Russia", which aims to develop mass and professional sports, modernise sports infrastructure, and increase the accessibility of sports facilities. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Yekaterinburg from August 22 to 24.
