Dennis Smith Jr. Returns to the Dallas Mavericks on a One-Year, Non-Guaranteed Contract

Dennis Smith Jr., the former first-round pick, has signed a one-year, non-guaranteed training camp deal with the Dallas Mavericks, his former draft team. This move comes as the Mavericks prepare for training camp, set to begin on September 30.

Smith Jr. spent the 2023-24 season with the Brooklyn Nets, appearing in 56 games and making 2 starts. His career with the Nets, however, did not lead to a permanent contract for the upcoming season.

The Mavericks' current backcourt includes Kyrie Irving, D'Angelo Russell, Jaden Hardy, Dante Exum, and Brandon Williams. With a crowded backcourt, Smith Jr. will have to outwork his competition to earn a full-time roster spot for the 2025-26 season.

Smith Jr.'s tenure with the Mavericks spans over his first two and a half seasons, during which he started all 101 games he appeared in. His career-high of 15.2 points per game was achieved during his first season with the Dallas Mavericks. In the 2023-24 season, he averaged 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

In total, Smith Jr. has played for six different franchises over seven professional seasons. Despite his longest tenure being with the New York Knicks, not the Dallas Mavericks, he will have the opportunity to prove himself once again with the team that drafted him.

The deal for Smith Jr. is valued at $2.3 million for the 2025-26 season. As of now, there is no information available about how many games he will play for the Mavericks in the upcoming season.

The Mavericks currently have 14 of 15 active roster spots filled for the 2025-26 season. This does not prevent Smith Jr. from earning a contract, as training camp provides an opportunity for players to impress the coaching staff and secure a spot on the team.

As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, the return of Dennis Smith Jr. adds an interesting dynamic to the team's backcourt. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how Smith Jr. performs in his second stint with the Mavericks.
