Competition concludes: SAM-Skatefest 25
Mannheim, Germany - The Skatepark Schönau, a popular spot for skaters in the north of Mannheim, is set to celebrate its 11th birthday with the SAM Skatefest on September 27th. This annual event, organised by the city of Mannheim in cooperation with several other entities, promises a day filled with skateboard challenges, workshops, and discussions about the future of the skatepark.
The Skatepark Schönau was initiated and advocated for by Skaters aus Mannheim (SAM), a local skater group that played a significant role in its approval by the city council. SAM also made a large donation towards the financing of the skatepark. The children and young people were involved in the selection of the skatepark planner, demonstrating Mannheim's commitment to involving its youth in communal decision-making processes.
The day's events kick off at 3 PM, with a Kids' Workshop by the Skateboard Academy Mannheim. Registration for the workshop is possible on the day of the event from 2:30 PM onwards by parents or guardians. At 4 PM, there will be an exchange on "Future ideas for the Skatepark" with representatives from politics.
From 5 PM, the Skateboard Challenges of the Skateboard Academy will take centre stage. Food will be provided by the Youth Caritas' food truck, ensuring that attendees stay energised throughout the day.
Mannheim is committed to implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and in January 2023, the city received the "Child-Friendly Municipality" seal. The city prioritises planning with and involving children and young people in communal decision-making processes, as demonstrated by the SAM Skatefest.
The SAM Skatefest will be held at the Skatepark Schönau, Lilienthalstraße 197. This year's event marks a significant milestone for the skatepark, which has been a beloved facility in Mannheim for over a decade. Come join the celebration and be a part of the skateboarding community in Mannheim!
