Competing Waves: Latest Outcomes at Marlow Regatta and Cambridge Bumps Tournaments
Crushing It: recap of the action-packed weekend at Marlow Regatta and Cambridge Bumps
Welcome to Across The Line! Let's dive into the electrifying race weekends across the UK.
London streak after a dominant performance
With the season’s end around the corner, London RC is hitting its stride at an opportune moment. They critically dismantled every hurdle thrown their way, extending a seven-second gap between them and Thames RC. A triumphant victory indeed! Yet, history looms large for coach Stu Heap and London RC as they prep for the Henley Royal Regatta next week, aiming to steer clear of repeating past mistakes[1][2]. Oxford Brookes University BC took second and third, signifying another nail-biting Temple Challenge Cup showdown with Harvard University, ASR Nereus, and other potential entrants[3].
On a juvenile level, St Paul’s School BC claimed top honors in their absence, being 12 seconds ahead of their closest rivals Bedford School BC. Radley College BC, Latymer Upper School BC, and St Edward’s School BC found themselves in the C Final[4].
The Windsor Boys' School BC yet again emerged victorious, but the story lies in Molesey BC, who have steadily gathered momentum. Molesey BC were just 1.3 seconds behind Windsor, while Windsor’s ‘B’ crew trailed narrowly by less than two seconds[5]. One cannot help but get anxious for all British clubs following such promising performances.
Lady Margaret and Jesus make waves at Cambridge May Bumps
Lady Margaret College BC holds the men's lead after four days of rugged competition on the Cam[6]. The occasion was significant, as the club celebrated their 200th anniversary by defending their Men's Headship. For the women, Jesus College BC had a fantastic second day, overtaking Caius College BC and initiating a dismal descent for them. Jesus College BC's triumphant team included Boat Race talent[7]. Regrettably, the top-ranked crew went down to Trinity Hall College BC to end the May Bumps competition at the third spot[8].
A substantial leap was made by Peterhouse M1, following Olympics champion Tom Ford and moving up eight positions over the four-day event. They also became one of four Peterhouse crews (M1, M2, M3, and W1) to claim 'blades,' awarded for a successful bump[9]. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Peterhouse M4 could not secure the entire 'blades' sweep, receiving 'spoons' for having been bumped in every race[10].
Several crews experienced surge, such as Darwin College M1, which ascended eight spots and entered the second division of racing. Hughes Hall BC W1 climbed six spots while Selwyn College BC W3 shot up a division, jumping seven spots[9].
