Damian Warner, Canada's former Olympic decathlon champion, withdrew from the world championships event before it started on Saturday due to an unresolved Achilles injury. This absence leaves the competition intriguingly open, as Warner was aiming to match his Olympic gold with world gold at the current world news event in Tokyo.

The decathlon competition, being held as part of the current world championships in Tokyo, involves ten events. These include the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 metres, among others. The high jump and 400 metres events will take place in the evening session on Saturday, while the decathletes will next compete in the long jump and shot put on Saturday morning. Each event in the decathlon competition takes place over multiple days.

In the ongoing competition, Pierce LePage, the defending champion, had a disappointing start with a 10.84-second time in the 100 metres event. LePage's compatriot, Sander Skotheim, won a fair play award for pacing LePage through the final 1,500 metres in the decathlon competition, despite failing to register a height in the pole vault.

Meanwhile, Warner's Olympic gold was won at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium in 2021. His journey in the decathlon competition saw him overcome challenges, including crashing out of the world market last year after three no-heights in the pole vault. Prior to his Olympic victory, Warner had previously collected two silvers from his eight appearances in the world championships.

The absence of Warner and Markus Rooth, who took Warner's title in Paris, has created an opportunity for other competitors. Leo Neugebauer, a decathlete from Germany, seized this opportunity, winning the title in the decathlon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with 8,804 points.

As the competition progresses, the world championships decathlon competition promises to be an exciting spectacle, with several contenders vying for the top spot. The final day of the championships, which is also the concluding day of the decathlon competition, approaches, and the anticipation among athletes and fans continues to grow.
