Gather 'Round for Hanukkah Compassion in Osnabrück

Geared up for a touching display of empathy during Hanukkah 2022? Reinhart Richter, an 84-year-old cultural consultant from Osnabrück, has ignited a solidarity vigil outside the city's synagogue. With anti-Semitism rearing its ugly head again, Richter laments, "The return of anti-Semitism after Jewish people have suffered such unbearable hardships is heartbreaking."

From December 7th until Hanukkah's end, at least two volunteers will guard the synagogue 12 hours a day, ensuring relief every 2 hours. Security personnel will be provided by the Diocese of Osnabrück, Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation, local theater, and VfL Osnabrück sports club, among others. Mayor Katharina Pötter (CDU) will join the solidarity vigil on its launch day.

Richter's compassionate call to action has inspired an overwhelming wave of support from the community. Volunteers eager to partake ensure the daily vigil endures until Hanukkah's close.

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, dates back over 2,000 years. Worshippers commemorate the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by kindling a candlestick daily, celebrating a tradition of miraculous light.

Osnabrück and Lower Saxony are preparing Hanukkah celebrations this year, with Villa Seligmann's Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck leading a discussion on Hanukkah history, symbolism, and customs. Singer and cantor Sveta Kundish will perform at Villa Seligmann on December 8th.

The Osnabrück solidarity vigil stands as a powerful symbol of religious tolerance and understanding. In the face of Jewish community's current struggles, such events emphasize the significance of religious freedom and unity. They provide comfort and support throughout intolerance and hatred's midst.
