Fresh Take: Bayern Puts Faith in Kimmich, Nagelsmann Decides on Captain

In a clear show of support, Bayern Manager Vincent Kompany has declined to offer coaching advice to Germany Coach Julian Nagelsmann on selecting a new captain for the German football team. When questioned about Bayern player Joshua Kimmich (29), considered a top candidate following Ilkay Gündogan's departure, Kompany was clear: "Jo is a leader for us, without a doubt."

"The impact he's had on me so far has been vital and exactly what I needed. How things unfold for the national team is a matter for their staff to decide. It's a process that should be handled within their DFB environment. My input doesn't come into play here," Kompany asserted. The DFB team will convene in Herzogenaurach for the first time following their home EM, for Nations League games against Hungary and the Netherlands. It's expected that Nagelsmann will unveil the new captain then.

"At last, a game at the Arena"

Meanwhile, Kompany is eager for his first home game as Bayern coach during the season's initial break, with a clear objective in mind. "After what feels like forever, there's a game in the Allianz Arena," said the 38-year-old Belgian, referring to the Sunday (5:30 PM/DAZN) match against SC Freiburg's league leaders. "We aim to bring joy to the fans." The target is victory.

Kompany remained quiet on potential changes to the starting lineup, particularly in defense, following the inconsistent performance in their 3:2 season opener in Wolfsburg. There's a possibility that the new Portuguese recruit, João Palhinha, will be shifted to midfield.

Kompany praises Olise's confidence

Kompany expressed optimism about the other top newcomer, Michael Olise, following their initial weeks. The 22-year-old, who secured silver with France at the Olympics in Paris and joined the Munich team late, is "a young man bursting with self-assurance." His acclimation is going smoothly. "Let's hope he can showcase his full potential in the coming weeks," Kompany said.

Kompany's focus remains on Bayern's internal matters, as he mentioned, "The selection of the German national team captain isn't my concern. That's a decision for their personnel."

With the DFB team set to gather for the Nations League games, Kompany is looking forward to his first home game as Bayern coach, expressing, "It's a game at the Allianz Arena, something I've been anticipating. Our aim is to bring joy to the fans and secure the victory."
