Committee verifies official election outcome
In the recently concluded local elections in Marl, a total of 65,406 citizens were eligible to cast their votes. The official election results were confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, revealing an approximate voter turnout of 54%.
Around 15,000 voters chose to exercise their right to vote by mail, while the remaining votes were cast in person. The mayoral election saw 34,928 valid votes, with Thomas Terhorst (CDU/FDP) securing the majority with 43.28% of the votes. Unfortunately, none of the candidates received more than 50% of the votes, hence a runoff election will be held.
The runoff elections for both the mayoral position and the district administrator position are scheduled for September 28. For the mayoral position, the runoff will be a contest between Thomas Terhorst and the incumbent mayor, Werner Arndt of the SPD. In the race for the district administrator, Bodo Klimpel (CDU/FDP) and Dr. Karsten Schneider (SPD) will face off.
The runoff elections for the city president and the regional council of the Ruhr area association on September 28 will determine the final winners. However, the election results are yet to be known.
Michael Lauche, the election officer and deputy mayor, expressed his gratitude to the 500 election helpers for the smooth organization of the local elections. No further details about the runoff election results were provided in the article.
