Committee of Three Deciding Justice Yashwant Varma's Future
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, has constituted a three-member committee to probe a recent cash discovery at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma. The investigation will be led by Justice Aravind Kumar, a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, alongside Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, and B.V. Acharya, a Senior Counsel from the Karnataka High Court.
The formation of this committee follows the acceptance of an impeachment motion against Justice Varma, signed by 146 MPs, which has sparked the consideration of an impeachment process as part of the investigation. The committee, however, is not solely focused on the discovery of cash at Justice Varma's residence but will also examine any other relevant matters that may arise during the investigation.
The announcement of the committee was made on August 12, 2025. It is important to note that while Om Birla is responsible for the establishment of the committee, he is not a member of it. The investigation will take place in Delhi, with the exact location being Justice Yashwant Varma's residence.
The cash discovery, which occurred in March of this year, has raised questions about the integrity of Justice Varma. The impeachment process, while a potential outcome of the investigation, is not the sole focus of the committee's inquiry. The committee's findings will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse surrounding the case.
