In a recent development, a seven-page report has been submitted at the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Sylhet, shedding light on the looting of over 5,00,000 cubic feet of stone in the districts of Sylhet and Narayanganj. However, the report does not provide detailed information about the joint operations that recovered the looted stone.

The report, prepared by a committee led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Padmasan Singha, lists 137 individuals involved in the stone looting. Notably, the report does not specify whether these individuals are included among the 1,500-2,000 suspects named in a case filed by the Bureau of Mineral Development.

The committee, which also included Afzalul Islam, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment, and the recently transferred Companiganj UNO Azizunnahar, was appointed by the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet district following a High Court intervention. The committee submitted its report on August 20, 2022, after a three-day extension from its initial due date of 17 August.

The report follows severe criticism over the looting of around one million cubic feet of Sada Pathor from Bholaganj's Sada Pathor. Amid the criticism, the outgoing DC Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad was made Officer on Special Duty, and the UNO was transferred on 18 August.

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has held the local administration responsible for the looting of the stones. Following the recovery of the looted stones, they were reinstated at their original sites.

Interestingly, the report proposes ten recommendations to prevent future looting incidents, but it does not mention any new recommendations to address the current looting incident. The report will be forwarded to the Cabinet Division for further action.

Subsequently, joint operations in Sylhet and Narayanganj recovered over 5,00,000 cubic feet of looted stone. Most of the named individuals in the report are political party leaders and activists. The report does not provide detailed information about the operations that led to the recovery of the looted stone.
