Committee announces findings regarding the election process
The city of Aachen's election committee announced on Monday, September 15th, that a runoff election will be held in the mayoral race following the municipal elections on September 14th. The turnout for the first round was 108,175 valid votes.
According to election supervisor Dr. Markus Kremer, a total of 108,175 valid votes were cast in the mayoral election. However, no candidate received more than half of the valid votes, with Michael Ziemons receiving the highest number of votes, 43,860, and Sibylle Keupen receiving the second-highest, 35,587.
The Municipal Election Act requires a runoff election when no candidate receives more than half of the valid votes. As a result, the runoff election will be between Ziemons and Keupen.
The runoff election is scheduled for Sunday, September 28th, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This election will determine the winner of the mayoral election in the city of Aachen.
