Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering a significant shakeup under Commissioner Rob Manfred, with plans to geographically realign the league and potentially disband the traditional American League (AL) and National League (NL). This proposed change aims to modernize the league, reduce travel strain on players, and improve broadcast appeal.

The proposed realignment would see MLB expand to 32 teams, possibly including those in Charlotte and Portland. With this expansion, the league could be reshaped into eight divisions of four teams each, minimizing travel, especially over long distances like East Coast to West Coast trips.

One of the key changes would be the replacement of the AL and NL with East and West conferences, a move closer to the NBA/NHL model and intended to streamline scheduling and playoffs. This change could potentially lead to a more pleasing postseason format for networks like ESPN, which could increase broadcast appeal and revenues.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the prospect of losing historic league rivalries and identities. For instance, the longstanding rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants might be disrupted by geographic realignment. Some fans are concerned that this change could dilute the appeal of classic rivalries like the Subway Series (Yankees vs. Mets).

On the other hand, others appreciate the potential benefits, such as reduced late-night games caused by time zone travel and the possibility of new rivalries and balanced competition. For example, the proposal fosters new rivalries, such as Yankees vs. Red Sox in the National League.

Former GM Jim Bowden advocates for a complete overhaul with eight geographically based divisions to truly optimize scheduling and reduce travel. He acknowledges fan resistance to some teams ending up in "untraditional" divisions but argues the benefits justify this approach.

The proposed changes could also affect national and American league records, with charter members of each circuit potentially needing to switch leagues. Moreover, the schedule could be decreased to 154 games, eliminating interleague play, and adjusting travel schedules to further reduce wear and tear on players.

However, Manfred's proposal has been met with criticism, with some suggesting he should focus on addressing issues within the league rather than pursuing radical changes. Manfred's schedule makers have been criticized for requiring the Yankees to make two separate west-coast road trips in May, with stops in Sacramento, Seattle, Colorado, and Los Angeles.

In summary, the proposed MLB realignment and disbanding of the AL and NL could modernize the league, reduce travel strain, and improve broadcast appeal, but may alienate fans attached to traditional league rivalries and histories. The final reaction will depend on the balance between preserving tradition and embracing a more geographically sensible, modern league format.
