CDU-Left Party Cooperation: Rumors Debunked in Chancellor Race

Commission Urges Proposal for Worker Safety Directive on Electronic Devices Risks

Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link Amidst the heated chancellor race, rumors of CDU potentially revoking its anti-cooperation stance with the Left Party have sparked discussions. A casual remark by Chancellor's Office head, Thorsten Frei, hinted at a fresh evaluation of the situation.

During a live broadcast interview with RTL and ntv, Frei hinted, "We gotta have a chat about it." The CDU's party-set resolution cannot be wiped away instantly. "But, in this current predicament, we may need to revisit one or two points."

CDU leader, Friedrich Merz, surprisingly fell short in the initial chancellor round on Tuesday morning. To arrange a follow-up vote later the same day, two-thirds of the MPs voted for an expedited motion.

Succeeding this majority only through the AfD (Alternative for Germany, an alleged right-extremist group) or the Left Party meant that Union officials also held negotiations with the latter. However, the CDU has maintained its long-standing incompatibility resolution against the Left, severing any chance of cooperation. This resolution was passed in a CDU party conference back in 2018.

As per the latest developments, the CDU/CSU (Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union bloc) and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) have formed a new coalition government, placing Friedrich Merz in potential chancellorship. Recent coalition talks and government formation have revolved solely around the CDU/CSU and the SPD, with no hint of a shift in the CDU's unwavering policy towards the Left Party[1][2][5].
