A New Tack for Poland: Weber Pins Hopes on Nawrocki for a Pro-European Agenda

Pro-European Direction Anticipated from Nawrocki, According to EVP Leader Weber - Commission urged to increase efforts in the battle against corruption, as suggested by MEPs.

Wanting to build bridges after the heated election, Manfred Weber, head of the European People's Party (EPP), expresses wishes for a pro-European stance from newly-elected President, Karol Nawrocki. "It is essential that the elected head of state becomes a unifier," says Weber. "Despite our differences, I am hopeful he will work cohesively with the Polish government under Prime Minister Tusk, to benefit Poland and a robust Polish voice in the EU," he adds in an interview with dpa.

Regrettably, the pro-European contender, Rafal Trzaskowski, the liberal Mayor of Warsaw, didn't secure a win. "The Polish electorate has made its decision, and we acknowledge their verdict," remarks Weber. Coming close to the mark, Trzaskowski received "almost half" of the votes.

In a tight race, Nawrocki, an independent candidate backed by the conservative PiS party, emerged victorious on Sunday, a mere 370,000 votes ahead of Trzaskowski. Poland, with approximately 29 million voters, was the stage for this close-call election.

Post-election, Manfred Weber, as the President of EPP, hopes for political collaboration between the newly-elected President, Karol Nawrocki, and the incumbent Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to ensure a strong Polish voice in EU matters, focusing on the unification of the country and enhancing its influence within the EU.
