The intricate chancellor election has ignited debate within the Union over collaboration with the Left Party. Compelled by the necessity of discussions with the Left to orchestrate a second vote, the CDU/CSU have found themselves in a predicament, despite their incompatibility resolution against them. On Wednesday, Chief of the Chancellor's Office, Thorsten Frei, voiced openness to revoking this resolution.

"We'll need to discuss this collectively," Frei shared with broadcasters RTL and ntv. Whilst the CDU federal party congress's resolution isn't easily reversible, "we undeniably find ourselves in a scenario that warrants reevaluating certain concerns."

In a surprising turn of events, CDU leader Friedrich Merz fell short in the first round of the chancellor election on Tuesday morning. To arrange a second round on the same day, a motion necessitated the support of two-thirds of the MPs—a majority that could only be achieved with the far-right AfD or the Left Party, alongside CDU/CSU, SPD, and Greens. The Union, consequently, held talks with the Left as well as the Greens. Nevertheless, the CDU's incompatibility resolution, proposed at a CDU party conference in 2018, bars cooperation with the Left1.
