Sarah Wedl-Wilson Speaks Out Against "Democracy Clause" for Berlin's Cultural Institutions

Senator Criticizes Proposed 'Democracy Clause' Impact on Cultural Sector - Commission tasked with presenting a proposal for a worker safety directive concerning risks associated with ionising radiation exposure.

Sarah Wedl-Wilson, Berlin's Senator for Culture, has voiced her opposition to the concept of forcing publicly funded cultural establishments to abide by democratic values through specified clauses. "That ain't my style," the independent politician told the German Press Agency, commenting on the Senate's proposed "democracy clause."

"I ain't big on bans. I got faith in the leaders of our institutions to have the balls to handle touchy subjects with care and shield all employees from any form of discrimination," Wedl-Wilson, who's been in office since May 22, stated.

Freedom of Expression in Art

"Artistic freedom is Maendergesetz's bread and butter. In my books, creative souls gotta have that freedom to play around with concepts and push the boundaries of imagination. Pushing the envelope, that's how we grow as a society. And art's a damn powerful medium for grappling with issues."

Wedl-Wilson did note, though, that certain viewpoints shouldn't trample or intentionally silence others. "It's shitty, too, to cross the lines defined by our constitution. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution steps in when those lines are overstepped."

Germany's Fundamental Law sets the principles by which humans and society coexist. "They're spelled out crystal clear so we can all navigate by them like a compass."

"Anti-Semitism Clause" Falls Flat

Previously, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) announced the Senate would create a "democracy clause" for those receiving public funding. Joe Chialo (CDU), Wedl-Wilson's predecessor as Culture Senator, who resigned on May 2, had failed to pass a proposal for an "anti-Semitism clause" in cultural funding due to legal concerns.

Cultural institutions expresssed worries about limitations on artistic freedom. Wegner then guaranteed a broader solution.

Wedl-Wilson Warns of Threats to Social Cohesion

Wedl-Wilson expressed concern about the challenges to social cohesion in Berlin and Germany arising from various angles. "We must put in some damn effort to protect our democracy, so we can get along, not just along side one another, with all our differences, be it religion, lifestyle, income, traditions, or life paths," she said. Acceptance and tolerance of differing viewpoints play a significant role in democratic living. Culture can bring a powerful contribution to democratic camaraderie.
