Things got heated and chaotic during the "Together for Germany" rally in Nuremberg, where counter-protesters attempted to disrupt the gathering. In the eyes of the law, they set up multiple roadblocks in the city center and some incidents involved officers being attacked. Cops had no choice but to dished out some force, using batons and pepper spray, as a result of which, eight of their peers got injured.
So, who's "Together for Germany" you ask? Well, they called for protests in numerous cities on the weekend, championing tougher border controls and ceasing financial and military assistance for Ukraine. Earlier, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution warned that extremists might attempt to steal the spotlight and incite counter-protesters.
According to the police, the "Together for Germany" rally in Nuremberg had around 500 participants, while the counter-demonstrations, officially counted as three, had a couple hundred protesters. A group of counter-protesters seem to have their sights set on the police, with one protester managing to injure an officer and snatch their baton. A 27-year-old was nabbed by the cops and is currently under investigation, with the public prosecutor applying for his detention.
Now, Nuremberg's "Nazistopp" group declared that there were 2,000 counter-protesters, and they weren't too pleased about the police's actions, alleging that they made numerous arrests without reason, set up elaborate cordons for ID checks, and overused pepper spray.
Following the rallies, there were scuffles between folks from different political camps, resulting in 23 more arrests. The cops are now investigating these incidents for pertinent offenses such as causing grave bodily harm and hurling insults.
