The Partito Democratico (PD) is facing internal strife as the regional elections in Marche approach, with key issues such as the failed referendum on labor and citizenship, the role of the party's leadership, and the strategy for recovering moderate votes causing division. The failed referendum in June has been a point of contention, with some members feeling that the Secretary should have been held accountable for the PD's decision to side with the CGIL against the Jobs Act. This has led to calls for change within the party, with some members advocating for recognition of the PD's contribution to building unified coalitions in the regions. Maximum unity is expected to boost the candidacies of the presidential candidates in the regions, particularly those from the reformist area. However, the idea of outsourcing the goal of recovering moderate votes to a new centrist force or 'reformist tent' is being discussed and weighed. Some members of the reformist wing within the PD are considering not participating in Tuesday's meeting of the National Directorate to express their displeasure. Lorenzo Guerini, Simona Malpezzi, Lia Quartapelle, and Marianna Madia are among those considering non-participation. A minority PD deputy has expressed discontent about the timing of the meeting, suggesting it should have been convened three months ago. The agenda for Tuesday's meeting includes a report by Secretary Elly Schlein on the complex international situation, reforms of the right, and the upcoming regional elections. Schlein's focus will be on agreements reached for center-left candidates, a move that hasn't been done in 20 years. The candidate of the PD running in the Marche region, supported by the Reformists, is Francesco Acquaroli. Matteo Ricci, a reformist candidate, is running for governor in the Marche region, and his victory would be significant for Elly Schlein and add political significance to the autumn's round of elections. The outcome of Ricci's election could result in Elly Schlein taking credit for the success of the unified strategy if he wins, or the defeat being shared if he loses, as the candidate would be an expression of the minority. There is unity within the party regarding the battle to stop the reform of the judiciary, including the separation of magistrates' careers. However, there have been accusations of preventing an internal debate in appropriate forums, with the debate instead occurring in newspapers over the summer. An online meeting of Energia Popolare, a group supporting the Bonaccini motion, is scheduled for Saturday to discuss the two different approaches towards the Secretary: dialoguing and cautious versus critical and impatient. Despite the internal strife, there is no dissent within the party regarding support for Ukraine or condemnation of the Israeli army's operation in Gaza City. The analysis of another long-serving PD parliamentarian outlines possible scenarios that have been well-studied by the Secretary. Alessandro Alfieri is a reformist within the PD who is advocating for a more united approach to the upcoming elections. As the regional elections approach, it remains to be seen how the PD will navigate these internal tensions and present a united front to voters.
