Speaking on the 80th anniversary of liberation from Nazism, Thadeus Koenig, President of Thuringia's Landtag, urged a relentless stand for democracy. "We inhabit a robust democracy that's preserved peace for eight decades. It's vital to maintain this balance, and we do so by putting our hearts into advocating for others and the fundamentals of our society from the core of our communities," Koenig expressed during the commemoration on May 8.
Koenig Sets the Record Straight
With Germany carrying a profound, historical burden and committed to preserving the memory of the "atrocities of unprecedented scale" perpetrated under Nazism, Koenig highlighted those who jeopardize Jewish lives, inflame hatred, and challenge democratic essence as misguided. "Individuals who undermine the sanctity of Jewish existence, bombard their fellow beings, and question the bedrock of our democratic ethos have misunderstood the essence of May 8. Those who diminish or deny the Holocaust disrespect the victims, survivors, and their progeny," he stressed.
May 8, 1945, signified the unconditional capitulation of the German Wehrmacht, thereby marking the end of World War II.
