In a recent Instagram post, Florian Wirtz shut down rumors about his alleged desire for the iconic jersey number 10 at Liverpool, currently worn by Alexis Mac Allister. "Ain't nobody saying I wanna 10," the 22-year-old German football sensation posted, emphasizing his respect for fellow players. He concluded his post with a mischievous clown face emoji.
Previously, Sky reported a different story, claiming discussions included Wirtz expressing a preference for the number 10. But don't be fooled, Wirtz warned, "Don't believe everything you read."
As a current midfielder for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Wirtz wears the number 10 with pride, but it seems that number might stay put should a transfer to Liverpool happen.
Liverpool snapped up the young star last summer, with his contract expiring on June 30, 2028. The number 10 has a rich history at Liverpool, with Michael Owen and Sadio Mané among its previous wearers.
Even though there have been offers exchanged between the two clubs, the deal hasn't been sealed yet. According to a Kicker report, Bayer Leverkusen rejected the second offer, worth a reported €118 million euros plus €12 million euros in bonuses. The first offer, allegedly €100 million euros with an additional €15 million euros, was also turned down.
The brass at Bayer Leverkusen are rumored to be seeking a price tag of at least €150 million, a figure publicly stated by CEO Fernando Carro last year.
Wirtz takes the field tonight in Munich for the German national team, battling Portugal in the Nations League semi-final. In the German team, he carries the number 17.
