Chatting It Up: Florian Wirtz Addresses Liverpool Rumors

Munich - Florian Wirtz, the young German footballing sensation, has set the record straight about his contract negotiations with Liverpool FC, dispelling a few rumors in the process. In a recent Instagram post, Wirtz quipped, "Who says I want the number 10? I respect players," referring to the coveted jersey number. He also added, "Don't believe everything you read." Capping off the post with a clown face emoji, Wirtz, known for wearing the number 10 at Bayer Leverkusen, clearly had some fun with the speculation.

Initially, Sky reported that discussions with the English champions involved Wirtz's desire for the number 10, currently sported by Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield.

A Rich History with the Number 10

Wirtz, the precocious midfielder, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023, with his contract set to expire on June 30, 2028. The number 10 has a historic significance in football, worn by Liverpool legends like Michael Owen and Sadio Mané in the past.

As of now, negotiations between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have yet to reach an agreement. According to "Kicker," Bayer Leverkusen rejected a second offer, which reportedly amounted to €118 million euros plus an additional €12 million in incentives. In the initial round of negotiations, Liverpool supposedly offered €100 million euros with an additional €15 million in add-ons.

Bayer Leverkusen brass is rumored to be holding out for a transfer fee above €150 million, a figure once publicly stated by CEO Fernando Carro as the minimum asking price[1][2].

Wirtz will take the pitch tonight in Munich with the national team for the Nations League semi-final against Portugal. In the German national team, he dons the number 17 jersey.

Behind the Scenes

While Florian Wirtz hasn't explicitly confirmed his Jersey Number preference, it seems his desire to join Liverpool remains strong. It's worth noting that Liverpool's third bid, reportedly worth €113 million, is well above the average transfer fee for players his age. As of now, it's looking increasingly likely that this transfer saga will soon reach its conclusion[1][2].

  1. Despite the ongoing negotiations between his current club, Bayer Leverkusen, and Liverpool FC, Florian Wirtz has not yet officially disclosed his preferred jersey number among the European leagues, but his persistent interest in joining the English champions remains evident.
  2. Known for wearing the number 10 at Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz's recent comments about not wanting a specific jersey number could be a subtle indication that he might consider the slightly lower number 17 when he potentially joins the Liverpool squad, donning a jersey number significant in European-leagues history.
