Title: Digital Treasure Trove of Music Manuscripts at The Handel House

The Handel House, nestled in Halle – the birthplace of the baroque composer, Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759) – has digitized a whopping 2,500 objects, including approximately 800 musical manuscripts, according to Jens Wehmann, the librarian at the museum. One captivating find is an early copy of the coronation hymns of the English kings from 1730, consisting of 160 pages. Fetched from Christie's auction house in London, this priceless manuscript set the librarian back around 20,000 euros in 2023.

Delving deeper into the digital archives, you'll come across manuscripts penned by local musicians, such as Robert Franz (1815-1892), Carl Loewe (1796-1869), Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752-1814), and Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654). Many of these pieces boast connections to Handel, including correspondence between Robert Franz and his role as an editor of Handel's works in the style of his time.

Five years ago, the museum also digitized around 1,500 graphics, including historical copper engravings of Handel himself, buildings in Halle, and old city plans and city views dating from the 18th/19th centuries. To access these digitized pieces, simply pay a visit online. Unfortunately, the museum doesn't have any original works by Handel.

This year's Handel Festival, set from June 6 to 15, takes the theme "Fresh Wind: The Young Handel in Italy." Approximately 44,000 visitors from Germany and around the world are expected to immerse themselves in the festival. Last year saw around 23,500 people visit the Handel House Museum, nearly as many as in 2023.

Though Handel was born in Halle, he spent much of his later life in London, where he died in 1759 and was laid to rest at Westminster Abbey. Among the celebrated works in Handel's rich operatic and oratorio oeuvre are the choral work "Messiah" with its iconic "Hallelujah" chorus, the "Music for the Royal Fireworks," and the "Water Music."
