First Lady Melania Trump paid tribute to the late Barbara Bush at a ceremonial event held in the East Wing of the White House. The former First Lady would have celebrated her 100th birthday on June 8.

In her address, Melania hailed the far-reaching influence of Barbara Bush—more than just a wife and mother of two U.S. presidents, but an ardent champion for social reform. "She was iconic in her work on literacy, women's empowerment, AIDS advocacy, and LGBTQ+ rights," Melania expressed to People magazine. Melania highlighted Barbara's trailblazing spirit: "I applaud Mrs. Bush's unwavering belief in the essential role of women in all facets of life—whether in business or homes."

Scenes from a Heartfelt Gathering

The event drew friends and family, including Barbara's youngest daughter Doro Bush Koch, who seemed moved during her tribute to the Bush family. Also present were Alice Yates, CEO of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, and acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino.

However, some notable figures were conspicuously absent: George W. Bush and his wife Laura, who have maintained a distance from the Trump family, as well as President Donald Trump himself.

A Life of Service to the Nation

Born Barbara Pierce, descended from the 14th U.S. President Franklin Pierce, Barbara wed George H.W. Bush in 1945. Together they raised their six children, with one loss in early childhood.

During her time as Second Lady during her husband's vice presidency under Ronald Reagan, Barbara gained a national following as a nurturing presence. When the Bushes left the vice-residence for the White House in 1988, their status as First Family only grew.

Barbara's speech at Wellesley College's commencement in 1990, originally intended to be delivered by author Alice Walker, is memorable. Facing student protests against her appearance, she won over the audience with wit and grace. She playfully speculated that someone might one day "occupy the White House as a partner to the President," a sentiment that Melania commended for encouraging future First Ladies to forge their unique paths.

Melania believes that the iconic speech had a transformative impact: "Barbara Bush's commitment to respecting traditions while challenging norms continues to resonate."

Iconic Role Model for Future Leaders

Like Melania, former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden recognized Barbara Bush as a source of inspiration. In a speech shortly after President Joe Biden's inauguration in January 2021, Dr. Biden expressed: "Mrs. Bush inspires us to make our communities better and stronger by coming together. I strive to emulate her timeless values."

Barbara passed away on April 17, 2018, merely months before her husband who passed on November 30, 2018.
