Commencement of retrieval operations for submerged luxury yacht, Bayesian, off the Italian coast
Reborn from the Deep: Resurfacing the Sunken Superyacht Bayesian
The dramatic recovery of the submerged British-flagged superyacht, the Bayesian, is underway off the coast of Italy. This luxurious vessel met its tragic demise near Sicily last summer, taking down tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter, and five others.
The recovery process is being orchestrated by two impressive floating cranes - the Hebo Lift 2 and Hebo Lift 10. The latter, one of Europe's mightiest maritime cranes, sailed from Rotterdam to the port of Termini Imerese in Sicily over the weekend.
The rescue mission is closely supervised by the Italian coast guard to secure the safety of the recovery team. The operation is projected to last between 20 to 25 days, after which investigators will pore over the wreckage.
Three crew members are being scrutinized in connection with the sinking on August 19, 2021.
Did You Know?- The Bayesian was an impressive 183ft long and weighed a formidable 473 tonnes.- In the aftermath of the sinking, a significant and dedicated search effort was undertaken, ultimately locating the remains of the six individuals who could not be accounted for initially.
Aside from tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five others, the yacht's fatal voyage took the lives of chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and the ship's cook Recaldo Thomas.
During the initial rescue phase, 15 of the 22 passengers were rescued, one body was recovered, and six individuals were initially reported missing.
A pre-inquest review into the tragic events was held last month, with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) expressing hope to release an interim report in the coming weeks. Simon Graves, the principal investigator, stated that while their probe is still in its early stages, a final report is expected to emerge within months.
