Commencement of Legislative Council nominations in Hong Kong set for October 24th
The Chief Secretary for Administration, Eric Chan Kwok-ki, has announced the dates for the nomination and election process of the next Hong Kong Legislative Council, scheduled for 2025.
The nomination period will commence on October 24 and conclude on November 6, 2025. This timeline has been set to ensure a level playing field for all candidates, including incumbents, as the operation of the current seventh-term Legislative Council will end and it will stand prorogued on the same day, October 24, 2025.
The general election is set for December 7, 2025, during which 90 members will be elected. This approach follows the Legislative Council Ordinance and past practice to prevent giving undue advantage to incumbent members during the election period.
The arrangement regarding the Legislative Council will be gazetted on Friday. The legislature will hold its first chamber meeting after the summer recess on September 3. The arrangement for closing the Legislative Council from October 24 to prevent incumbent members from having an undue advantage during the election period is consistent with the procedure followed by the previous Legislative Council.
It is worth noting that the current term of the Legislative Council will end on October 24, and Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, the President of the current Legislative Council, will preside over its final meetings.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu is scheduled to deliver his fourth Policy Address to the lawmakers in September. The details of the nomination process for Hong Kong's next Legislative Council have not been specified in the announcement.
In the previous election in 2021, the nomination period lasted 14 days. The government has not yet revealed whether this duration will remain the same for the upcoming election.
