These honored ones have left a lasting impact on the nation, showing immense courage in the face of adversity. Their lives were tragically cut short during the Russian invasion and related conflicts, with casualties mainly arising from combat injuries, explosions, and violence associated with the war.
Take, for instance, Artem Datsyshyn, an acclaimed ballet dancer who succumbed to injuries sustained following Russian shelling in Kyiv in February 2025. Or consider Major Andriy Nikolaychuk, who perished during the Battle of Kupiansk in September 2025. Notably, Ablyatif Rustem, a Crimean Tatar historian and political figure, met his end while fighting against Russian forces in Kherson Oblast, also in September 2025.
Some fallen heroes were the victims of brutal ethnic violence during World War II, such as Jews who tragically lost their lives at the hands of Nazi and collaborating Ukrainian forces in places like Kremenets and Kozin. They suffered horrors such as being burned alive in synagogues or confined and murdered in ghettos.
Among the martyrs we remember is Serhiy Nigoyan, the first casualty during the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. A true symbol of the fight for democratic reforms, Serhiy was of Armenian-Ukrainian descent and sadly lost his life due to repressive actions by police forces during protests.
In essence, the honored souls we commemorate are either military personnel who fell during the ongoing struggle against Russia, brave partisans resisting occupation, victims of ethnic violence during World War II or civilians who lost their lives while fighting for freedom and democracy. They left this world as a result of warfare-related trauma, including shelling, mines, sniper fire, and repressive actions by occupying forces or ruthless regimes.
Politics and general news are inextricably linked to the ongoing war conflicts in Ukraine, as they highlight the brave soldiers who lost their lives, such as Alexander Karabanov, Alexander Karpov, and Alexander Kinder, and the civilians who stood up against occupying forces or repressive actions, like Serhiy Nigoyan. Amidst these wars and conflicts, casualties include war heroes like Andriy Nikolaychuk, Ablyatif Rustem, and Artem Datsyshyn, who perished in combat or while resisting, and victims of ethnic violence, such as innocent Jews during World War II in places like Kremenets and Kozin.
