Commemorations for the 58th anniversary of ASEAN's establishment held in Greece
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee in Athens (ACAT) recently held a celebratory event to commemorate the bloc's 58th founding anniversary. The gathering was attended by ambassadors from ASEAN member countries, their spouses, embassy staff, officials from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives from ASEAN dialogue partner nations, and friends of ASEAN.
Indonesian Ambassador Dr. Bebeb A.K.N. Djundjunan, who currently holds the ACAT rotating chairmanship, addressed the event. Ambassador Spyridon Voulgaris, Director of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also graced the occasion and congratulated ASEAN on ASEAN Day.
Voulgaris expressed his support for promoting ASEAN's vision in Greece and enhancing ASEAN-Greece ties across key sectors. He reaffirmed Greece's readiness to serve as a bridge between ASEAN and the European Union (EU).
The strategic partnership between ASEAN and the EU is a key focus, with the aim to deepen ties through cooperation in economic development, science and technology, and multilateral frameworks. ASEAN's strategy for this partnership involves strengthening the Strategic Partnership Plan (2023-2027), with a focus on collaboration in Horizon Europe (an EU research and innovation program), scientific cooperation, and facilitating networking events that promote mutual understanding and opportunities for researchers in ASEAN.
In terms of Greece, ASEAN's strategy revolves around fostering economic and regional diplomacy ties. This is exemplified by the Hellenic-ASEAN Business Council (HABC), which serves to promote ASEAN-Greece relations and economic cooperation. The council underscores ASEAN's approach to engage Greece as a key Mediterranean partner, contributing to shared interests such as energy corridors and regulatory cooperation, which Greece is actively developing across the Mediterranean region.
ASEAN also aims to foster cooperation between ACAT members and Greece. The celebration featured Indonesian cultural performances and traditional cuisine from ASEAN countries, with the Vietnamese Embassy introducing its signature dish - nem (spring rolls).
It is worth noting that the EU is ASEAN's second-largest investor, and the EU is ASEAN's third-largest trading partner. ASEAN, as the world's fifth-largest economy, continues to strengthen its global role.
ASEAN and Greece are reliable partners, united by shared values and a commitment to multilateralism, rules-based order, and international law. Dr. Bebeb A.K.N. Djundjunan reviewed key achievements of ASEAN, including community building and expanded cooperation with global partners. He emphasized ASEAN's message on a more united, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable association.
The event served as a testament to the growing ties between ASEAN and Greece, and the commitment of both parties to deepen their partnership in various sectors. The strategic approach outlined by the Indonesian Ambassador underscores the potential for significant growth and collaboration in the future.
- As the strategic partnership between ASEAN and the EU progresses, the need for artificial intelligence (AI) and law to ensure smooth and efficient collaboration in economic development and multilateral frameworks becomes increasingly important.
- In light of the growing partnership between ASEAN and Greece, it is crucial to keep the general public informed about the political, economic, and cultural developments in the region, as well as the shared values and commitments that unite both parties.
