Robert Redford, the iconic actor known for his roles in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Three Days of the Condor, and All the President's Men, has died at the age of 89. The news was confirmed by Cindi Berger, the chief executive of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.

Redford passed away in his sleep at his home in Utah. The cause of death has not been announced.

Redford's acting career spanned over five decades, and he left an indelible mark on the film industry. His films became cultural touchstones, and his charismatic performances earned him a place among the greats.

President Donald Trump paid tribute to Redford, expressing admiration for his acting career. In a statement outside the film industry, Trump called Redford 'great.' The US President's public tribute was a testament to Redford's widespread influence.

Ron Howard, another renowned film director, described Redford as a 'tremendously influential cultural figure' for his contributions to the film industry. Howard particularly highlighted Redford's impact on independent film, praising him for founding the Sundance Film Festival, the largest festival for independent film in the United States.

Robert Redford made his directorial debut with the film Ordinary People, which won four Academy Awards. His directorial career was marked by a commitment to telling compelling stories and supporting new talent.

Redford's impact extended beyond the film industry. Meryl Streep, who worked with Redford in the 1985 film Out of Africa, paid her respects, stating, 'One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.'

Stephen King, a famed horror writer, praised Redford as part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the 1970s and 1980s. Colman Domingo, an Emmy-winner, expressed admiration for Redford's impact, stating that it will be felt for generations.

Marlee Matlin, who starred in the multi-Oscar-winning 2021 film CODA, paid tribute to Redford. She noted that Sundance, the festival Redford founded, played a significant role in the film's attention. CODA came to attention because of Sundance, which has been a platform for independent films and new talent for over three decades.

Redford is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, his two daughters from his marriage to Lola Van Wagenen, and his seven grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones and the countless fans who admired his work.

In his final years, Redford was vocal about his political beliefs. He was critical of President Trump, comparing him to a dictator and expressing concerns about the threat to the freedom of the press. Despite these differences, Trump still paid tribute to Redford, recognising his significant impact on the film industry.

Redford's legacy will continue to live on through his films and the festival he founded. His contributions to the film industry, particularly in advancing independent film, will be felt for generations to come.
