In October 2024, the central celebration for German Unity Day will take place in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This year marks the 36th anniversary of German Unity Day, and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will also be commemorating its 35th anniversary.

Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has invited the public to join the festivities at the Mecklenburg State Theater tent on October 1st. Last year, around 200,000 people celebrated during the nationwide central celebrations for German Unity Day in Schwerin.

Schwesig believes that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has become more beautiful, more attractive, and more economically robust over the past 35 years. She acknowledges, however, that eastern German states still face economic and wage challenges.

In 2023, a festive ceremony (Festakt) was held in Schwerin to celebrate the 35th German Unity Day, hosted by Minister-President Manuela Schwesig at the theater tent of the Mecklenburg State Theatre. Along with invited guests, 50 additional citizens can also register their interest for the celebration, as announced by the State Chancellery.

Schwesig emphasises the significant contributions that the eastern German states have made to united Germany. She encourages everyone to come together to celebrate the progress made and to look forward to the future of a united Germany.
