27th Day of Sea Rescue Celebrated Across North and Baltic Sea Coast

Last weekend, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) celebrated its 27th Day of Sea Rescue with a series of events along the North and Baltic Sea coasts. One of the key locations was Grömitz, where visitors had the opportunity to witness firsthand the workings of sea rescue stations and engage with the rescuers.

The sea rescue station in Grömitz, in collaboration with neighbouring stations and a training center, offered a diverse program focused on sea rescue. The program provided visitors with an exclusive peek behind the scenes of the rescue units and the chance to board several rescue vessels, including the "Felix Sand" and "Henrich Wuppesahl" sea rescue boats, as well as the deployment boat "Mervi" and the training boat "Christoph Langner."

The event included an open ship day, allowing visitors to explore the rescue vessels up close. The rescue exercises in Gromitz harbour were a highlight of the action day, with sea rescuers demonstrating deployment scenarios alongside the Gromitz fire department, the German Red Cross, and a diving group from the Johanniter Accident Assistance.

Visitors also had the chance to engage in conversations with the sea rescuers, learning about their day-to-day activities and the challenges they face. Over 40,000 visitors attended the DGzRS stations along the North and Baltic Sea coasts, making it a successful event.

In addition to the vessel tours and demonstrations, the event offered a special contest with the grand prize being a ride on a maritime rescue cruiser inspection cruise. Other prizes included a collectible plush cushion and a set of clamps from the 27.5-meter rescue cruiser "Berlin."

To commemorate the event, a special commemorative T-shirt will be available at all participating stations and through the online store of the maritime rescuers. This event is a major public opportunity to learn firsthand about rescue missions and appreciate the maritime rescue service’s activities in detail, especially in the Baltic Sea region around Grömitz.

During the event, visitors could engage in enlightening discussions with the sea rescuers, gaining insights into their daily routines and the obstacles they encounter, which included topics like sports and sports-analysis, as these heroes frequently have to exhibit physical prowess and strategic thinking in their rescues. The Grömitz sea rescue station, in partnership with neighboring stations and a training center, offered various educational programs, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and demands of sea rescue operations, akin to participating in an intense sports-analysis session.
