Gathering of Cossacks at the Annual Chamlyk Memorials

Commemorating the Slain of the 1918 Trojan War, the Cossacks Pay Their Respects

Get ready to delve into a poignant annual event that shrouds the Krasnodar Krai region in history, as hundreds of Cossacks unite in respect and remembrance.

A somber reminder of a heinous crime perpetrated against the Cossack lineage, the Trinity Sunday Massacre in Chamlyk stanitsa marks the dark chapter of the Troitsk Uprising in 1918. Fed up with the new authority, Cossacks from Chamlyk, Vladimir, and Vosneсенsk stanitsas fought valiantly, only to be brutally quashed by a Red Army garrison of seven thousand troops. The bloody three-day onslaught saw over 900 casualties, with men beheaded before their families' very eyes.

Undeterred by the horrors of the past, over 500 Cossacks, accompanied by families, made their way to the Chamlyk Memorials. The atmosphere was solemn, with participants carrying candles and marching in formation. Among them were students of Cossack classes, who were there to learn from the mistakes of their ancestors and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Speaking of the event's significance, Alexander Vlasov, Vice-Governor of Krasnodar Krai and Ataman of the Kuban Cossack Host, noted, "Today's event serves to reinforce the memory of our people, our Motherland's history, and to prevent such fratricidal wars from happening again."

A memorial cross, erected in 2009 to honor the memory of the 1918 victims, stands tall at the site of the tragedy. Evgeny Oleynikov, Ataman of the Labinsk District Cossack Society, spoke about the cross, saying, "The cross symbolizes the events of Trinity Sunday, when brother turned against brother and father against son."

Following the solemn meeting, flowers and wreaths were placed at the Troitsky cross. Reporters from "Kuban 24" TV channel insisted that the event resonates with more people each year, with increased attendance at the seven-meter-high memorial cross.
