Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek
Imogen Heap's Groundbreaking Vocal Production Techniques
Imogen Heap, a renowned British musician, created a unique vocal production for her hit song "Hide and Seek" using unconventional methods. In 2005, Heap released the acapella track, which went on to sell over half a million copies.
The core of "Hide and Seek's" vocal effect came from a Digitech Vocalist Workstation EX, a MIDI keyboard, and a Minidisk 4-track recorder. Heap used the Digitech's vocoder setting, a feature that pitch-shifts and formant manipulates her vocal input in real time to produce robotic and ethereal harmonies without a synthesizer.
Heap layered up to four transposed copies of her voice, each with a pitch controlled via MIDI input from the keyboard. By setting the device to a four-note polyphony, it would randomly choose four notes from the ones she played, creating unpredictable and haunting harmonic combinations. This approach led to the signature "strange combination" of harmonies in the song, especially noticeable as the vocals soared higher in the second chorus.
This method made Heap's voice both the melody and instrumentation of the song, creating an innovative acapella soundscape that has become iconic.
Imogen Heap's groundbreaking production techniques are being showcased by alumni of a music school that offers degrees and short courses in London, LA, Ibiza, and Online. The school's music production institute is the only one to receive a TEF Gold rating. The school caters to various music-related aspirations such as DJing, music production, sound engineering, vocal performance, software engineering, radio, and songwriting.
The school's resources are provided by the team, and they can be accessed from anywhere without location restrictions. The school's Free Stuff page offers free courses, exclusive music-making tools, and tutorials. Lecturers at the school include Alex Wood, who specializes in Studio Vocal Production.
Heap's Mycelia project, "Life of a Song," visually traced the $1 million in royalties "Hide and Seek" generated. The project highlighted the complex financial dynamics of the music industry and Heap's ongoing commitment to artist empowerment.
The school provides modules to help students turn inspiration into original, polished tracks. By studying at this school, students can follow in the footsteps of Imogen Heap and create their own groundbreaking music.
