Commemorates resilience and cultural heritage of the Mexican people: Cinco de Mayo
LET'S DIVE INTO CINCO DE MAYO
From sea to shining sea, the U.S. is awash in vibrant celebrations for Cinco de Mayo, even though it falls on a Monday this year. Expect music, mouthwatering Mexican eats, and bottomless tequila amid a dazzling tapestry of culture - mind you, not always the most authentic!
The weekend saw a burst of activities across states with a substantial Mexican American population, such as California. Art installations, classic car shows, lively parades, and tantalizing food trucks were on the menu in the Golden State.
In Austin, Texas, the festivities were just as spirited, with kids snapping selfies alongside Disney's "Encanto" characters and a Monday luncheon featuring discussions on the meaning of Cinco de Mayo and the influence of Mexican Americans in Austin.
Here's a peek under the gaudy sombreros and behind the fake mustaches:
What the Day Represents
When we talk tacos and tequila, let's not forget the history! Cinco de Mayo marks the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. This epic showdown didn't just prove the worth of underdogs; it fueled the Mexican spirit against foreign interferences.
Mexico commemorates this victory annually in Puebla with historical reenactments. Actors don costumes of Mexican and French troops, and the Indigenous contingent, a crucial part of the win, known as Zacapoaxtlas.
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated as a nod to Mexican American culture, dating back to the 1800s in California. Parades, street food, block parties, mariachi competitions, and folkloric ballet – marked by twirling dancers in vibrant, ruffled dresses – are staples of the festivities.
Not Just Beers and Burritos
For many revelers, whether of Mexican descent or not, Cinco de Mayo means tuning in for tequila shots and devouring nachos and tacos. But as you raise your glass in jovial camaraderie, remember the roots of this celebration, which paid tribute to the revolutionary spirit and battles fought by our Mexican ancestors.
Sehila Mota Casper, director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, encourages everyone to delve deeper into this historical occasion and its importance to Mexico. By doing so, she believes we'll help dismantle the stereotypes that have tainted the holiday.
"Since then we've seen a shift to more commercialization and commodification and mockery over the years," Mota Casper said. "I think that has a lot to do with the commercialization of products and especially Latino heritage."
Jacob Troncoza, a proud Mexican American, celebrates Cinco de Mayo in his household to educate his kids about the revolution and the battles their forefathers fought. Others like Andrea Ruiz forgo the festivities, as their Mexican dads never celebrated. Yet, she can't help but see the irony in widespread celebrations, given the anti-Mexican rhetoric we've been hearing lately.
Political Shenanigans
Trump's stance on Mexicans hasn't been a secret. Labeling immigrants as criminals, ending birthright citizenship, and relabeling the Gulf of Mexico – his actions have been divisive, to say the least. Yet, it remains a point of strength for him as he cracks down on immigration and targets undocumented individuals.
In the presidential race, data showed more young Hispanic men moving to the right and voting for Trump. The future administration's stance on Cinco de Mayo is uncertain, as the Associated Press awaits a response from the White House.
Trump's handling of immigration has sparked controversy, but polls indicate less consensus on overstepping boundaries compared to other issues. In Chicago, parade organizers canceled the celebration due to heightened immigration concerns.
To Wrap Up
While Cinco de Mayo is rooted in a significant historical event, its celebration in the U.S. has evolved into a broader cultural and social phenomenon. As you join the celebrations, take a moment to appreciate the spirit behind this day and its significance in Mexico.
