"Since then we've seen a shift to more commercialization and commodification and mockery over the years," Mota Casper said. "I think that has a lot to do with the commercialization of products and especially Latino heritage."
Jacob Troncoza, a proud Mexican American, celebrates Cinco de Mayo in his household to educate his kids about the revolution and the battles their forefathers fought. Others like Andrea Ruiz forgo the festivities, as their Mexican dads never celebrated. Yet, she can't help but see the irony in widespread celebrations, given the anti-Mexican rhetoric we've been hearing lately.
Political Shenanigans
Trump's stance on Mexicans hasn't been a secret. Labeling immigrants as criminals, ending birthright citizenship, and relabeling the Gulf of Mexico – his actions have been divisive, to say the least. Yet, it remains a point of strength for him as he cracks down on immigration and targets undocumented individuals.
In the presidential race, data showed more young Hispanic men moving to the right and voting for Trump. The future administration's stance on Cinco de Mayo is uncertain, as the Associated Press awaits a response from the White House.
