Artgerm's Journey: From Hong Kong to the Comic Book World

Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, a renowned comic book artist, made his debut at the Thought Bubble Comic-Con event in the United Kingdom in May 20XX. This marks a significant milestone in Lau's career, as he continues to captivate audiences with his striking portrayals of female superheroes.

Born and raised in Hong Kong before moving to Singapore, Lau's artistic journey began at an early age. He discovered his passion for art and nurtured his talent, eventually gaining recognition through his fan art on DeviantArt.

Lau's style is a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, which sets him apart from many comic book artists. He started his digital art journey with Adobe Photoshop 5 and has since evolved his style from anime-influenced characters to a more refined blend that balances realism with stylisation.

One of Lau's most notable works is the new Supergirl design, which he describes as 'Supergirl next door'. This approach reflects Lau's constant challenge to work on characters outside his comfort zone. Despite finding it difficult to make unique portrayals of characters with masks, like Batman or Iron Man, Lau's dedication to pushing his boundaries is evident in his work.

Lau's preference for Corel Painter, a software known for its ability to mimic traditional painting techniques, further distinguishes him in the comic book industry. He currently uses both Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter for his work, demonstrating his versatility as an artist.

Lau's art has not only captured the attention of fans but also the industry giants. He is currently working closely with DC, one of the leading names in comic books, on various projects. His main goal in creating comic art is to bring in new fans to comic books, a testament to his passion for the medium.

Despite the blessings that social media has brought to Lau's career, he considers it a double-edged sword. He believes that while it provides a platform for artists to showcase their work, it also exposes them to criticism and comparisons that can be overwhelming at times.

In the coming months, Lau will be attending MCM Comic Con London from 23-25 May, giving fans a chance to meet the artist behind some of their favourite comic book characters. With new projects on the horizon, including the release of the new Supergirl costume due in 2026, Lau's journey in the comic book world is far from over.
