Colts Welcome Back Trey Washington After Xavien Howard's Retirement
The Indianapolis Colts have welcomed back safety Trey Washington to their 53-man roster, filling the spot left by the retirement of cornerback Xavien Howard. Howard's departure comes just three days after a challenging performance against the Los Angeles Rams.
Howard, who joined the Colts mid-August due to injuries in their secondary, had a rocky four-game stint. Despite his impressive past as a 2020 All-Pro and league-leading interceptor in 2020 and 2018, Howard managed only 11 tackles and one fumble recovery with the Colts. His reunion with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who he played under in Miami, did not translate into the expected quick adaptation.
In his final game with the Colts, Howard gave up seven receptions on 10 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown against the Rams. His performance progressively worsened over the next three weeks following the season-opening win against his former team, the Miami Dolphins.
The Colts have decided to move on from Howard, bringing back Trey Washington to take his spot. Howard's retirement ends his brief stint with the Colts, with his last NFL game played for the Miami Dolphins in the 2022 season.
