Colorado's 'Seconds Matter' campaign targets distracted driving risks this summer
Colorado is stepping up efforts to tackle distracted driving with a new awareness campaign. The Colorado State Patrol will launch the 'Seconds Matter' initiative in April, aiming to remind drivers how quickly distractions can lead to crashes. Officials stress that even brief moments of inattention can have serious consequences on the road. The campaign will run throughout the summer, focusing on common causes of distracted driving. These include anything that takes a driver's eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off driving. Last year alone, the Colorado State Patrol investigated over 3,700 crashes linked to distracted driving.
Since Colorado's hands-free law came into effect, data from smartphone apps and sensors shows a 4.7% drop in distracted driving across the state. This reduction is estimated to have prevented nearly 600 crashes, over 400 injuries, and six fatalities. However, authorities warn that the law's success depends on drivers staying committed to safer habits. Shoshana Lew, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), has reinforced the message that no phone activity is worth risking lives. The campaign will highlight how just a few seconds of distraction can result in a collision.
The 'Seconds Matter' campaign aims to further reduce distracted driving incidents in Colorado. With ongoing enforcement and public awareness, officials hope to build on the progress already made. The effort underscores the importance of keeping full attention on the road at all times.
