Trail Details
Climb through shaded forests and gaze upon Clear Creek Falls as you traverse undulating switchbacks, their familiar zigzags making the incline more manageable. Witness the transition of the terrain as you ascend, moving from lush evergreen forests to a dazzling alpine meadow.
The challenges peak (quite literally) around mile 1.3 to 1.9, where the steepest incline takes you through the hardest stretch of the hike. Pat yourself on the back – or catch your breath - at the Lower Basin, a breathtaking, open area surrounded by towering peaks and an array of wildflowers.
Long after the struggle is over, the magnificent vistas of the Lower Basin and Fuller Peak will remain imprinted in your memory, a testament to the beauty hidden within the Columbine State's remote peaks.
Getting There
Begin your adventure on the Million Dollar Highway, a scenic route that runs south from Ouray. Marvel at the stunning scenery and the "Switzerland of America" scenic pullout as you travel 20.9 miles south. Turn right onto County Road 7 / US Forest Service Road 585, following it for 4.4 miles, where you'll reach the parking area for the trailhead on your right and the South Mineral Campground on your left.
