Colorado Springs charities step up as shutdown leaves troops without pay
Military personnel and civilian workers in Colorado Springs continue to face financial struggles due to rising living costs. The recent government shutdown worsened the situation, leaving many without pay. Local charities stepped in to provide food and holiday meals to those affected.
During the shutdown, organisations like Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado and Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center distributed food to veterans and unpaid civilian employees. Mt. Carmel alone gave out 850 turkeys with sides to military bases in the area. First Sergeants' Councils at the Air Force Academy and Space Force bases Peterson and Schriever also coordinated support for unpaid workers.
Charities expect ongoing demand for support on military bases in Colorado Springs. The financial pressure on troops and civilian workers persists, driven by the area’s high cost of living. Local organisations continue to provide aid, but challenges remain for those serving in the region.
