Colorado Rockies Face Possible Contention for Most Dismal Season Record With White Sox

Slumping Colorado Rockies Suffer Historic Start in 2025

The Colorado Rockies stumbled their way to a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday at Coors Field, but this victory merely masked the team's dismal performance. With a paltry 5-26 record at the end of the month, the 2025 Rockies are chalking up an incredible .167 winning percentage — an all-time low in MLB history.

Crushing the second-worst record in baseball, even worse than the 2024 Chicago White Sox, the Rockies are on track to a season that's nothing short of embarrassing.

But this game mattered little, as it merely added to Colorado's run differential of -78, making them nearly a run worse than the second-worst team in the league. Their pitching staff has surrendered an astonishing 172 runs, averaging nearly six runs per game, despite the decline in baseball's offense.

This team has proven itself to be a colossal mismanagement of funds, with an approaching $130 million payroll. Kris Bryant, with his $27 million a year contract through 2028, has managed to cost the Rockies 2.5 wins above replacement in the past three seasons. Kyle Freeland and Ryan McMahon, who are each making $16 million this year, are lackluster players at best. Antonio Senzatela is saddled with a five-year, $50.5 million contract for reasons that defy explanation.

The roster is a patchwork of misfits, a depleted farm system, and a player development program that can't seem to produce a single star player. Boasting only one triple play during the season so far, the Rockies have never been able to field consistently good pitching, and their offensive capabilities are nowhere near elite, all thanks to costly player acquisitions like Kris Bryant.

So, how did Denver end up with a team this bad? The answer lies in poor spending decisions, a weak farm system, and a player development program that's yet to bear fruit. What's worse is that winning in Colorado just got that much harder.

Young talents like Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Michael Toglia show potential, but the team lacks high-profile players to bolster the lineup. With a focus on draft-and-develop strategies, progress is expected, but the team is unlikely to contend meaningfully in 2025. Long-term success hinges on player development breakthroughs, improved offensive production, and buried franchises hope for a World Series title.

In the meantime, fans can take solace in the fact that Coors Field offers some of the best beer in baseball.

  1. The 2025 Colorado Rockies, despite securing a victory over the Atlanta Braves, are on a trajectory towards one of the most embarrassing seasons in baseball history, with a .167 winning percentage, surpassing even the 2024 Chicago White Sox.
  2. The Rockies' run differential continues to deteriorate, putting them nearly a run worse than the second-worst team in the league, as they struggle with an average of six runs surrendered per game.
  3. Kris Bryant, Kyle Freeland, and Ryan McMahon, among others, have failed to deliver on their high salaries, costing the Rockies significantly and contributing to the team's dismal performance.
  4. Young prospects like Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Michael Toglia offer hope for the future, but the lack of high-profile players coupled with a reliance on draft-and-develop strategies means that meaningful contention is unlikely for the 2025 Rockies.
The Rockies have squandered funds in an astonishingly wasteful manner.
