Colorado lake plunge, scheduled for New Year's Day, canceled due to warm temperatures
This year’s Evergreen Lake Plunge on New Year’s Day has been called off due to unsafe ice conditions. Organisers cited warm weather and ice measuring less than two inches thick as the reason. The annual event raises funds for the INSPIRE special needs programme at Evergreen Park and Recreation District.
The cancellation was announced by hosts News Colorado’s Alan Gionet and the Active 4 All Foundation. Normally, the lake opens for skating around 15 December, but this year’s mild temperatures have delayed freezing. With forecasts predicting continued warmth, organisers decided the ice would not be thick enough for a safe plunge.
Last year, nearly 400 participants took part in the event, which supports INSPIRE and other local programmes. The Active 4 All Foundation is now looking into rescheduling the plunge for a later date. Meanwhile, donations are still being accepted to help fund the affected initiatives. The lake remains closed for skating, and no new date has been set for the plunge. Organisers have not yet confirmed whether the event will return in 2025.
The cancellation may reduce fundraising for INSPIRE and related programmes. Donations remain open to offset the shortfall. Organisers will update the public if a new date is chosen for the plunge.
