As a goaltender, Mackenzie Blackwood has witnessed an unprecedented journey up close. Switching teams mid-season, Blackwood went from the struggling San Jose Sharks to the thriving Colorado Avalanche – a transition that exposed him to vastly different team environments and leadership structures. Both the Sharks, with an injured Logan Couture, and the Avalanche, missing their captain Gabe Landeskog for a portion of the season, didn't have their typical captains in full swing.

This unusual situation afforded Blackwood a unique perspective. He joined a Colorado team brimming with energy, though without its captain. As he described, the atmosphere's mood was noticeably different compared to San Jose, despite the void left by a missing captain.

"It's kind of similar in a way because you still don't have that one guy," Blackwood commented. "But it's tough missing your leader. It's a hole in the roster."

The return of Landeskog has breathed new life into the Avalanche. Now, as they face elimination in Game 6, Landeskog serves as a crucial component of their efforts to stay alive in the playoffs.

"The makeup of the (Avs) is a lot different. The locker room presence is different too," Blackwood added. Keeping this core group motivated, focused, and connected will be key to their comeback from a 3-2 series deficit.

Ryan Warsofsky, blackwood's first-year coach in San Jose, and Colorado's Jared Bednar, a mentor from their shared ECHL days, shared insights on navigating the season without a healthy captain. Their paths diverged on April 15, 2023, the day Landeskog rejoined the Avalanche for a successful conditioning stint, while Couture announced his retirement.

The emotional rollercoaster of losing and regaining a star captain has been a defining aspect of both teams' seasons. Though Couture's injury forced retirement, Landeskog has returned to incredible fan fare and made an immediate impact.

"It's some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen," Blackwood said, referring to Landeskog's return. "He scored, and it was just amazing. We were all so happy and proud of him."

Although only a few text messages passed between the two captains, Landeskog felt empathy for Couture's career-ending injury. "It's too bad… He's a great competitor. That's a career cut way too short," former teammate Jody Shelley shared, expressing the sentiments echoed within the hockey community.
