Colombia Pursues Criminal Organization as Part of Ongoing Peace Efforts

Colombia is actively engaging in outreach and law enforcement efforts targeting a dangerous criminal organization, estimated to have around 1,400 members, involved in drug trafficking and other crimes. This organization, which does not have a political agenda, is a focus of the Colombian government's efforts to overcome violence and dismantle criminal enterprises as part of its "total peace" initiative.

President Gustavo Petro announced his administration's advancement in these outreach efforts, stating that multiple conversations have taken place, especially since December 2023. Notably, progress has been made in talks with Qatari authorities, according to Jiménez Millán, who also reiterated that concrete results will be shared with Colombian society once they become available.

The Colombian government's aim is to get the members of this organization to leave the criminal life and join civilian life. The state is persistently building paths to overcome violence, as Jiménez Millán stated. The future official negotiation table with the organization will address topics to be disclosed once the conversations are made official.

These efforts are part of a broader coordinated international strategy against criminal organizations. Colombia, in cooperation with U.S. agencies, is targeting cartel leadership and dismantling methamphetamine labs and other criminal infrastructures. Recently, the United States Justice Department charged five senior leaders of the United Cartels, a designated foreign terrorist organization, marking a significant step in law enforcement cooperation aimed at dismantling such cartels.

However, the persistence of various armed and criminal groups linked to illicit economies continues to challenge Colombia's internal security and peace efforts. Despite these challenges, Colombia remains committed to its goal of building a peaceful and secure nation for its citizens.

  1. The Colombian government's focus on dismantling the dangerous criminal organization, despite it having no political agenda, aligns with their wider policy-and-legislation and war-and-conflicts approach.
  2. As part of their general-news updates, the Colombian administration shares progress in outreach efforts with international partners, including discussions regarding policy-and-legislation and politics, such as talks with Qatari authorities.
