You Heard it Here First:
Hot on the heels of announcing Lukas Kwasniok (43) as the new head coach and just weeks after promoting former player Thomas Kessler (39) to the hot seat of sporting director, Lukas Berg has emerged as the Technical Director for the Bundesliga contender.
The club made the announcement bright and early on Saturday morning.
Our man, Berg, age 31, was previously in charge of the Cologne youth academy and is now set to team up with Kessler as part of the sports department's double-headed leadership.
Adieu to the Old, Hello to the New: "We're confident that Thomas Kessler and Lukas Berg, as a power duo, will steer the sporting future of the FC," said FC managing director Philipp Türoff (49).
Kessler's Rise to Power
Kessler had already assumed the role of sporting director after parting ways with sports director Christian Keller (46) late in the season. Meanwhile, the position of Technical Director was created just for Berg.
Background Check: Lukas Berg is a key cog in the reorganized management machinery of 1. FC Köln. A 31-year-old whiz kid, he has been promoted to the esteemed post of Technical Director at the club. Previously, Berg, while serving as the Head of the Youth Academy at 1. FC Köln, oversaw the growth and development of young talents within the club[1][3].
Berg, now the Technical Director, will focus on structural and strategic issues within the club's sporting leadership[2]. He'll work side by side with Thomas Kessler, the newly-appointed sporting director, forming a formidable team in FC Cologne's sports department[3]. This reorganization is just another step in the club's larger plan to consolidate its sporting management after its comeback to the Bundesliga[3].
