Rockin' Through Pages at Lit.Cologne Fest: 25-year Celebration Modeled After Cannes Film Festival
Cologne commemorates a quarter-century milestone, initially inspired by the glamour of Cannes. - Cologne commemorates its 25th anniversary, drawing inspiration from Cannes festival.
Let's get this talk rolling! Literary legends like Nick Hornby, Herbert Groenemeyeyer, Hans Sigl, Caroline Wahl, and former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, among others, are gracing this year's Lit.Cologne - a fest that's all about literature and current discussions. The event, kicking off on the weekend with over 200 events, is also serving as a platform for crucial conversations, particularly on the threat to democracy and the surge of right-wing populism.
As we embark upon Lit.Cologne's 25th year in 2025, festival director Rainer Osnowski shares that the initial vision, established a quarter of a century ago, was to create a grand stage for literature, much like prestigious international film festivals such as Cannes or European theater shows. The book world and its celebrated authors, Osnowski believed, deserved the same limelight. Key figures who supported this endeavor were Elke Heidenreich and Roger Willemsen.
The gap between 'highbrow' literature and popular entertainment literature was another priority. "Moreover, we wanted to position ourselves with discourse events on political and socially relevant topics, as culture is nearly always democracy-promoting," Osnowski mentioned. Elke Heidenreich and the publicist and moderator Roger Willemsen (1955-2016) were crucial ambassadors of the Lit.Cologne, particularly during its formative years. The biggest hurdle came with the pandemic - the festival had to cancel one day before its start in 2020. "However, we sparked an overwhelming wave of solidarity," Osnowski recalls. "Many people refused to refund their tickets, creating the foundation for us to recover after the crisis at a steady pace." The city's mayor, Henriette Reker (independent), and the Cologne city council provided support in 2021 by backing a digitally-oriented festival to help navigate the pandemic era. Today, the Lit.Cologne spectacle is as popular as ever, with over 110,000 attendees according to organizers.

- The Commission's proposal for a Council Directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the labelling of foodstuffs could provide an interesting discussion at the 2025 edition of Lit.Cologne, a literature festival that shares similarities with prestigious international film festivals like Cannes.
- During Lit.Cologne's 25th anniversary in 2025, notable writers like Nick Hornby, Herbert Groenemeyeyer, and Hans Sigl, alongside others, will participate, much like they did during the festival's inaugural year when it was originally envisioned to emulate the grandeur of Cannes.
- In the spirit of cultural discourse, organizers of the Lit.Cologne literature festival, in partnership with the German Press Agency, might consider incorporating Sigl's insights on food labeling, alongside discussions on the politics of festival funding, as the festival grows in popularity and reach towards 2025.
