In a tragic accident in Styria, Austria, a truck collided with a train at an unguarded railway crossing in Wollsdorf, near St. Ruprecht an der Raab, on Monday afternoon. The truck's fuel tank ruptured, resulting in a devastating fire that severely injured the truck driver, who was airlifted to the hospital, and caused minor injuries to at least three train passengers.

According to the Styrian Provincial Police Directorate, the collision occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near the Rechbergstraße (B64). Four fire departments with more than 70 personnel worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames and secure the scene. Train traffic was temporarily halted, and the B64 was closed for several hours due to the incident.

Investigations indicate that the truck likely failed to notice a traffic signal, causing it to drive onto the tracks, resulting in the devastating collision. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The emergency response involved the deployment of Steiermarkbahn for train replacement traffic between Gleisdorf and Weiz to maintain some rail services in the area.

"We narrowly escaped a tragic catastrophe," said Einsatzleiter Leon Christandl of the St. Ruprecht an der Raab fire department. The remaining seven train passengers likely managed to escape unharmed.

The ensuing investigation revealed that the truck's driver may have missed a traffic signal, leading to the tragic collision. The truck's fuel tank ruptured, engulfing the vehicle in flames. However, the driver managed to evacuate before being airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.
