Jan Ullrich's Shocking Head-On Collision: "Rammed by a Car"

Collided head-on: Ullrich's account of the incident - Collision described as "direct impact to the forehead" by Ullrich.

Jan Ullrich, the legendary former Tour de France champion, has shared details about his recent cycling accident for the first time. The mishap happened on a main street near his home in Merdingen, Baden-Württemberg, where a car rammed into him, resulting in injuries.

In his podcast "Ulle & Rick," co-hosted with Rick Zabel, Ullrich recounted the haunting moments: "I'd been planning for one more lap, letting my legs loosen up. Just before reaching home on the main road, I was cycling along, and a driver pulled up wanting to make a turn, didn't spot me, and... slam! They rammed head-on into me on the left side."

After the incident, Ullrich was admitted to the hospital in Freiburg, where he is still recovering. "Pain ain't a walk in the park, but I've got only one tube drainage left. I had four yesterday," he quipped. Despite his condition, Ullrich revealed that he would still be at the "Jan Ullrich Cycling Festival" in Bad Dürrheim, though he won't ride this time.
