F*cking Interview with Legendary Costume Designer Colleen Atwood

Unleashing her dark magic once again, Colleen Atwood weaves her enchanted threads as the brains behind the bewitching costumes of Netflix's hit series, Wednesday. Join me, Spencer Williams, as we delve into the ghoulishly glamorous realm of her twisted but lovable creations, and discover the secrets behind the darkly delightful wardrobe of Wednesday.

Spencer Williams: Shit, it's an honor to have you here, Colleen.

Colleen Atwood: Likewise, man. Thanks for having me.

Spencer Williams: Let's dive right into the chaos that is Wednesday. In that first episode, you were thrust into the cauldron of responsibility, establishing not only Wednesday but the entire Addams family's unique style. Was it a f*cking nightmare, or was it like a walk in the park for you, knowing you're a fan of the Addams Family empire?

Colleen Atwood: Well, yeah, I've always had a soft spot for the Addams Family, ever since my grandpa casually knew Charles Addams back in the day. I grew up with an Addams Family cartoon in our family bathroom, and it's been a fascination of mine for as long as I can remember. When this project landed on my plate, I was determined to do it justice, while putting our own twisted twist on the classic characters for a contemporary audience.

Spencer Williams: The uniforms of Nevermore academy were straight out of a fucking fairytale. How did you approach designing them?

Colleen Atwood: You know, for the uniforms I had to create the fabric in large quantities to get that distinct purple hue. When it came to Wednesday's uniform, I opted for a soft gray palette instead of going with the traditional black and white stripe, as it provided a fresh take on the iconic look. And those subtle gradients on the collar? Yeah, that was all me. I was inspired by the sharp collars of the 60's Teddy Boy style.

Spencer Williams: The fucking Downton Abbey vibe for Principal Larissa Weems really elevated her character. What can you tell us about designing her wardrobe?

Colleen Atwood: Principal Weems was a delight to work on, and Gwendoline is just fucking fabulous. I was going for a classic, old-world glamor for her, which we achieved with tweeds and faded colors. I wanted the character to have a level of sophistication, but also wear clothes that she could rock at those fancy fundraisers.

Spencer Williams: I have to bring up the Rave'N dance scene. It was a fucking masterpiece. How the hell did you pull that off?

Colleen Atwood: The whole idea behind the Rave'N was to create a winter white scene, and that's exactly what we did. For Wednesday's dress, I wandered into a store on Bond Street in London and saw the perfect fucking gown. I bought it and replicated it, but made some adjustments to tailor it to Jenna's body and make it more cinematic. When I showed it to her, she loved it, and it became the iconic piece it is today.

Spencer Williams: The entire world is obsessed with the show, and the costumes are no exception. So, what can fans expect for season 2?

Colleen Atwood: Unfortunately, I can't reveal too much, but I can tell you that we have some darkly delicious plans in store for season 2. The costumes will be even more fascinating, twisted, and enchanting than ever before. I can't fucking wait for everyone to see it!

Spencer Williams: Colleen, thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about Wednesday. I love this goddamn show, and the world fucking loves it too. It's been an absolute pleasure.

Colleen Atwood: Thank you, Spencer. It's been a pleasure talking to you as well. And keep an eye out for season 2, it's going to be a fucking ride!
