Tragic Derailments and Bridge Collapses in Border Regions of Kursk and Bryansk, Russia

Collapse of bridges reported in Russia's frontier areas, Kursk and Bryansk.

Get ready for an unfiltered conversation about the recent chaos in the Russian border regions of Bryansk and Kursk. Late last night, two bridges succumbed to destruction and two trains derailed.

In the Shelesnogorsk district of Kursk, disaster struck as a bridge crumbled beneath a passing cargo locomotive. The catastrophe left sections of the train plummeting onto the road below, initiating a to-'n-fro between life and death for the unfortunate locomotive drivers, who were taken to the medical facility for treatment. The passenger tally on the train remains unknown.

A few hours prior, the unfortunate residents of Bryansk's border region abruptly found themselves enveloped in a shocking turn of events. A highway bridge succumbed to collapse, landing onto the railway tracks, which in turn led to a passenger train derailing. The authorities reported that at least seven people perished and 69 were injured, with three small souls added to the list of casualties being children.

Investigators Suspect Sabotage

It's all over the grapevine that sabotage lies at the heart of these cataclysms. The Russian Investigation Committee alleges that the bridges in Bryansk and Kursk were brought to ruins via explosions. The authorities in Bryansk declare that the bridge detonation occurred as a passenger train from Klimovo to Moscow, carrying 388 passengers, passed through. The explosive interference in rail traffic occurred at approximately 21:44 CET (22:44 local time), between the stations of Pilshino and Vygonichi. The debacle site is located around 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR reported on Telegram about another incident – a military freight train, en route to the Crimean peninsula, was obliterated in the Russian-controlled part of the Saporizhzhia region. The train, carrying tanks and wagons, was apparently brought to a halt due to an explosion, inaugurating a disruptive effect on a crucial logistics line for the Russian military in the occupied territories of the Saporizhzhia region and Crimea.

While HUR doesn't officially acknowledge responsibility for the bridge explosions, they indicate that the battle against the Russian invaders' supply chains is far from over.

Since the initiation of the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the authorities have routinely reported instances of sabotage on railway lines. When Ukraine responds, they explain their actions by stating that Russia utilizes the railway for the transportation of troops and weapons for their war in Ukraine.

Kursk and Bryansk are located in the southwest of Russia and share borders with Ukraine. There's a chance these bridge collapses might be connected to a new Russian offensive: sources say up to 50,000 Russian soldiers have amassed for an offensive on the Ukrainian region of Sumy. Sumy shares northern borders with both Kursk and Bryansk.

Politics expert Reisner claims that if the Russian army captures three more Ukrainian regions – Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk – they will effectively establish a buffer zone to protect Kursk and Bryansk from potential Ukrainian attacks.

Settlements Under Evacuation Orders

Allegedly in anticipation of the looming Russian offensive, Ukraine declared the evacuation of 11 villages in Sumy over the weekend. As per Ukrainian reports, a total of 213 settlements in the region have been evacuated so far in response to the continuous threat to the safety of civilians due to the relentless shelling of border communities.

Conniving minds in the Kremlin are said to have concocted a fanciful plan – an attack on Putin's helicopter – that supposedly never took place. The Russian army has been reinforcing its attack on Sumy since they managed to dislodge the Ukrainian army from Kursk in recent months. Ukraine instigated a surprise offensive in Kursk last year. The Russian forces later regained control of the territory, inch by inch.
